Offensive Promo Mocks Mayor, Immigrants

Below is a screen shot taken of a current promotion from Columbus radio station 610 WTVN. I am continually astonished by conservative media's depiction of immigrants, especially of Latin@ immigrants. I'm not sure which is worse-- implying that Arizona is the land of "proud Americans" and "scared illegals" or that "chasing aliens" is somehow recognized as recreation. You know what else Arizona is home to? Hate groups.

Interestingly enough, however, Arizona's 16 documented hate groups pale in comparison with Ohio's 27. According to the FBI, hate crimes against Latin@s have spiked in recent years, corresponding with a rise in anti-immigrant inflammatory rhetoric. Anti-Latino perceptions created and legitimized by the main stream media have sought to dehumanize immigrants, and have certainly played a role in the rise in hate crimes.

This is not the first time we've seen such an ad from conservative talk radio; in fact, this is reminiscent of promotion from 700 WLW a few years back. Thanks to the efforts of several of our Action Circle Members, that billboard was removed, and the station publicly apologized.

Call WTVN's main office at (614) 486-6101 to voice your disgust at their offensive marketing.

  1. I agree with Mayor Coleman that people have to express their disapproval of the Arizona law. I am appalled that persons who previously were concerned about personal freedom are sitting back and not complaining about this law. This law can (for all practical purposes it will) be used to discriminate against people of color, irrespective of the fact they are legal or illegal.

  4. I downloaded a copy of the Arizona immigration law and did not find anything that targets Latin Americans or more precise Mexican Americans. I am Latin American and find your comments to be more racist than anything written on the law itself.
Latin Americans are not “people of color” we are multi color, multi race, and all have different opinions on political issues.
The purpose of the law is to protect our borders and our country, remember 9/11 many of those who participated came to the US by crossing those borders, the law also protects American jobs. The fact is if you are a hard working American it does not matter what the law says we are protected by same constitution, and neither need protection nor representation by the mayor of Columbus Ohio. The mayor’s job is to concentrate on local issues that affect the citizens of our community, the streets and freeways in our town are full of potholes and the snow removal is one of worst I have experienced. Boycotts that target our own country and state economies create resentment, and in the end it does target minorities of all nationalities. I am all for equality but not for pampering refugees and especially illegal ones. This is a time when we need to stand united and support other states.
The state of Arizona is doing everything to protect its citizens. Mr. Coleman should adopt a similar stand instead of criticizing.
No petition here unless you have on to support the law.

  6. Specify what in this article is racist? Perhaps my 'white privilege' has blinded me to racism... if so, GOOD. But if the racist aspect of their add can be made more apparent, this blind white man would be thankful.

Your inability to stand up for what you believe in and answer my above query would therefore render your argument MOOT!

    Answer me!

  7. I apologize for the delay did not know anyone had posted a comment. It’s quite easy “people of color” translates into “color people” sound familiar. Just ask African Americans why that sounds like someone running fingernails over a blackboard. The rest is self explanatory Latin Americans are of all races, you might be confusing white with Anglo they are not the same Italians are White, Jews are White and a large percentage of Latin Americans are White some are Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans etc. Diversity exists all over the world it is not something unique to America.
The terrorist had passports but no record of them coming into the US by plane.
Illegally entering any country is just that illegal. As for Mexican Americans they have plenty of intelligent lawyers who know the laws and make sure they are well represented. But I’m sure they appreciate your concern.
